The largest deserts are covered in ice and you might not think of it as a desert but a desert is an area that does not receive enough water from condensation of atmospheric water vapor – in particular rain – that falls under gravity and therefor not enough to support most forms of life. In Antarctica and the Arctic there is a lot of ice but very few animals and plants.

The polar deserts might shrink because of global warming while the subtropical deserts – those dry, sandy deserts – are expanding because of the same reason and because of desertification.

The idea for the Dakar began in 1977 when Thierry Sabine got lost on his motorbike in the Libyan desert during the Abidjan-Nice Rally. After being saved he returned to France still enthralled by the wild landscape and promised himself he would share his fascination with the world. The Paris-Dakar race became the world’s most famous rally. Sabine died in a helicopter crash in 1986 but his legend lives on. Motorcycles took part since the first Dakar Rally, 1979.
