Actually, it is not mosquitoes that kill people but the parasite they carry that causes malaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately 200 million people worldwide are affected by <a href=\"https:\/\/didyouknow.org\/lists\/worst-pandemics-and-epidemics\/\">malaria<\/a> and about 500,000 die from it every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest known outbreak of malaria happened in the 1920s in Russia when 13 million people were effected and 600,000 died. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also proved that mosquitoes can thrive in cold temperatures. Mosquitoes are abundant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2015\/09\/150915-Arctic-mosquito-warming-caribou-Greenland-climate-CO2\/\">in the Arctic<\/a>&#8230; but not in Antarctica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mosquito\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/didyouknow.org\/animals\/files\/2010\/02\/mosquito.jpeg\" alt=\"mosquito\" class=\"wp-image-271\" width=\"220\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/didyouknow.org\/animals\/files\/2010\/02\/mosquito.jpeg 220w, https:\/\/didyouknow.org\/animals\/files\/2010\/02\/mosquito-200x133.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Malaria is caused by single-celled microorganisms parasite of the Plasmodium group that usually is spread by an infected female <em>Anopheles gambiae<\/em> mosquito. The disease affects humans and animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are about 380 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skeeterbite.info\/\">species of mosquito<\/a>, but only 60 transmit the parasite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tiny little help at hand<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australian and Vietnamese scientists use the mesocyclops, a tiny one-eyed shrimp-like creature, to combat mosquitoes successfully. Wherever they are placed, the mesocyclops destroy between 96% and 100% of the mosquitoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wild, wild world<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/didyouknow.org\/animals\/hippo\/\">Hippos kill more people<\/a> than any other wild animal, even lions and tigers &#8211; or <a href=\"https:\/\/didyouknow.org\/animals\/sharks\/\">sharks<\/a>. Even crocodiles kill more people than sharks.
