Britney Spears: princess of pop
When Britney Spears performed Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” for executives from Jive Records, she was signed on the spot. But her road to becoming one of music’s biggest marketing machines wasn’t a lucky break.
Tiger Woods started playing golf as a toddler. Shirley Temple was just 6 years old when she won an Oscar. By the time McCauly Culkin reached 12 he had earned $8 million. Ricky Martin was member of boy band Menudo – they replace members when they turn 16. Like these stars, from a very young age Britney, with the support of her mother Lynne, worked long hours to achieve her goal.
Baby One More Time
Britney’s first album, “…Baby One More Time“, released in January 1999, shot up the charts in record time all around the world. She became the first new female artist to have a simultaneous number one single in the Hot 100 and number one album on the Billboard 200. The album went five times platinum in the US.
The single was the biggest-selling debut ever in the UK, with 463,000 copies sold in the first week, becoming the fourth biggest UK chart hit of the 90s by a female artist (after Cher, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston). It was also one of the Top 10 singles most played on computers, for which Britney received the CDDB (CD Data Base) award. The world was in love with the new star.
Not only is Britney adored for her songs, she is a favorite with young and old. Her 1999 home video “Time Out With Britney Spears” went eight times platinum worldwide and five times in North America. She was also voted the fifth most beautiful person in a People online poll.
The second album, aptly titled “Oops!… I Did It Again”, released in May 2000, ensured her place among the rich – and the famous when she walked away with four Grammys in 2000. She won Female Artist of the Year, Female Album of the Year, New Artist of the Year, and Female Hot 100 Singles Artist.
Britney Spears’s name continues to rank as one of the most queried terms on Internet search engines. She is one of the most photographed women in the world and also one of the most marketed. Her career has been as finely choreographed as her shows.
